hmmm, what to do next?

in my original trip planning, i didn't expect to be in portland quite so soon -- i changed things around a bit when i discovered that keri and adam were headed to San Diego at the hour of painful on Saturday (today; in fact, i'm just back from taking them to the airport).

it certainly won't take me four days to get from here up and around the peninsula and back into seattle, unless there is some serious dawdling along the way.

i considered heading out to north-central or NE Washington, but the expected high temps near 100 have dissuaded me from that idea. i've had my share of heat on this trip so far (i'd forgotten how much warmer Portland is than Seattle!)

i also thought of heading up to canadia for a bit -- maybe ferrying from Port Angeles to Victoria (I haven't been there in 13 or 14 years), but I don't have my passport with me. this isn't likely to be a problem entering Canada, but seems to be a fast requirement for re-entry into the US. OK, on further investigation it's apparently not a *requirement* but the website notation is heavily guilt-inducing (language along the lines of “trying to verify your identity wastes the time of Customs Officers better spent on stopping people attempting to illegally enter the country” blah blah blah).

Dawdling is not such a bad thing. You are vacation, afterall. There are ton of places to stop or drive off the main road while you are going around the peninsula...Lake Quinault, all the beaches, Hurricane Ridge, Hood Canal, etc...at least it's going to be cooler in the mountains. Feel free to stop by if you hit our neck of the woods...

Okay, I'm commenting again even though I don't know you :) I've made a lot of trips to Canada in the past couple years, and it can be an absolute pain in the butt to get back in if you don't have either your passport or your birth certificate. One of my (hockey) teammates went to the trouble of having her birth certificate overnighted to her while we were up there playing because of the grief at customs.

Yes, what about the Olympic peninsula? You could drive out to Astoria from Portland, then head north to Aberdeen/Hoquiam, then loop around the peninsula through Queets, Forks, Port Angeles, and then head south. You could take the ferry back to Seattle from Kingston or Bremerton.
